and leave the paperwork to me!

Anyone who wants to sign any kind of contract in Spain, whether it's a rental agreement, internet, bank account, cell phone, car purchase, etc., needs a NIE, which is also their tax number. This does NOT automatically make you liable for tax in Spain.

You need it constantly in everyday life, even when accepting a package, for example. So there's really no way around it if you want to live here or stay for a longer period of time.

You will be given your NIE number directly at the appointment at the office. It is a white sheet of paper with a number on it and must be kept safe, as the authorities always want to see the original; a copy is of little use.

According to Spanish law, you MUST apply for residency after 3 months of staying in Spain if you are here for more than 185 days a year.

It is initially valid for 5 years and must then be renewed, after which it becomes permanent and no longer expires (it will then say “Residente comunitario permanente en Espana...” on the front If this is not stated, you know that you still have the temporary residence permit).

The temporary residence permit does NOT have an expiry date, but government agencies and banks usually know that it is valid for 5 years and can determine its validity based on the date of issue, and they often want to see a valid one.

Either a Spanish employment contract, registration as an autónomo in Spain, or alternatively sufficient funds in a Spanish bank account and private health insurance. Depending on the individual case, and whether you have children or not, the requirements vary and different options are available. The necessary amounts also change regularly.

With the digital certificate, you can now do many things online that you used to have to do at the government office. It's really super convenient, and the first thing I recommend you get after your NIE. Feel free to ask me about it.

For a small fee, I can apply for it for you, provided you have a NIE and the original paper or the green Residencia card (which contains the NIE number).

After applying, I will send you a code that you will need to take with you to one of many centers to verify your identity in person, and I will explain the process to you. I can then either download your certificate from my computer, which will allow me to complete some procedures for you online more quickly and at a lower cost, or you can download it yourself and complete things online yourself.

This is also mandatory: the car MUST be re-registered after six months of residence, and the driver's license must be exchanged after two years!

In the past, this was hardly ever checked or punished, but times are changing and it can be quite expensive, like all traffic tickets here in Spain. A German car with an expired MOT may also no longer be covered by insurance in the event of an accident, and that can also be very expensive...

As for the driver's license, it's worth noting that you'll have to exchange it for a German one in the next few years anyway, due to new EU legislation. So it's best to apply for a Spanish one right away and save yourself a step and possible fines ;-)

It's really important to take care of this, because in Spain, an appointment that has already been made does NOT protect you from a fine if it was made AFTER the MOT expiration date.

Then you're out of luck, even if the police know that appointments are hard to come by.
